The Red Sox (65-50) look to rebound from a tough loss to the Yankees (61-53) this afternoon at Yankee Stadium Mall and Mausoleum in New York (4:05 p.m., FOX). It’s a matchup of surprisingly strong starters today as Drew Pomeranz (3.36 ERA) faces de facto Yankees ace Luis Severino (2.91 ERA), who is damn good. Should be fun.
Last night was less fun. Yes, Eduardo Nunez was Thrown Out on The Bases Like a Nincompoop and yes, he tagged up on a ball in front of him, but a) It’s August, not October, b) He has merely hit everything in sight recently, c) He didn’t make the first or third out at third, for whatever it’s worth, and in so doing left a runner in scoring position and d) He was still almost safe despite, yes, a generous helping of dumb. It wasn’t great, but the Twitterwauling over it was a bit much for a team that hadn’t lost since July. Sometimes you’re going to run into a loss at a bad time. It could be worse. They could not be playing again today, for instance. But they are.
Not playing is Dustin Pedroia, who’s on the disabled list now. Otherwise the Sox are more or less running it back from yesterday, except Mitch Moreland is in at first base and, yada yada yada, that pushes outfielder Chris Young out against the righty. Here are the full lineups:
