Red Sox Minor Lines: Jason Groome takes a step back

A rough day for Groome, a strong one for Shawaryn.

Salem L 2-8 (F/10)

Josh Ockimey: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K

Austin Rei: 0-1, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K

Tate Matheny: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS

Mike Shawaryn: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

Stephen Nogosek: 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K

It was another strong outing for Shawaryn, who seems to be hitting his groove in High-A. This was his fourth consecutive start in which the righty allowed no more than one earned run and he has his ERA down to 3.12 since getting to Salem and 3.58 on the season. He’s also up above a strikeout per inning with Salem and is up to 115 strikeouts in 88 innings for the season. Unfortunately, the bullpen -- including Nogosek — struggled mightily and couldn’t hold on to his lead.

Greenville W 8-7

Lorenzo Cedrola: 2-5, 2 R, 2 K, 1 SB

Tyler Hill: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K

Roldani Baldwin: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 R, 4 RBI

Jason Groome: 2.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

After the most impressive outing of his professional career in his last start, Groome backslid in this one and struggled mightily. It’s times like these we need to remember just how young Groome is (he doesn’t turn 19 until late August) and how little professional experience he has. We’re going to have to be patient with the talented southpaw, even if it’s going to be frustrating at times. Meanwhile, what a game for Baldwin, who has quietly been killing it for Greenville all year and might be one of the most under-the-radar bats in the system right now.

GCL Red Sox W 5-3

Tyler Esplin: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 R

Bobby Dalbec: 1-3

C.J. Chatham: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 R

Cole Brannen: 2-4, 1 R, 1 SB, 1 K

Ritzi Mendoza: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

Chatham joins Dalbec on a rehab assignment down on the complex. Neither of them had truly encouraging games, but just seeing them on the field is nice, particularly with Chatham. One has to wonder how much longer Dalbec will be down there, though. Brannen, meanwhile, continues to get on base and now has a .486 OBP to start his professional career.

DSL Red Sox W 8-0

Freiberg Marin: 2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI

Alexander Martinez: 2-3

Eduard Conde: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 R, 3 RBI

Alejandro Rodriguez: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K
