I believe the Red Sox will draft Bubba Thompson, an outfielder from Alabama.

I predict (hope?) that the Red Sox, with their pick late in the first round, select OF Bubba Thompson from Mobile, Alabama. Thompson is a highly touted football player (and baseball player, obviously) from Alabama who has chosen to play baseball full-time at the University of Alabama. Scouts are impressed by his athleticism, in particular his speed and arm strength. His power was a concern in previous reports, but he has shown some signs of improvement this spring and is now considered to have average or just above average power potential. His makeup and work ethic are not concerns, and as far as I have read he has no significant injury history.

I believe he is a good fit for the Sox at their slot because he possesses a high ceiling and could prove to be a steal this late. There is also some risk, of course, with selecting such a raw player at this stage in the draft. I looked at a number of mock drafts and it seems that nobody can really decide quite where he should be selected, with spots ranging from mid-first to late-second round. He screams solid defense (in his scouting reports, I have not seen him play) and that is the type of player I can get excited about. The hit tool is the biggest question mark from what I can tell, and as I mentioned some scouts are beginning to come around a bit in this area of his game. For a player like this, with a high ceiling, I would like to see the Sox select him if he is still on the board at #24.
