Pawtucket W 5-4 (F/10)
Ryan Court: 2-5, 1 K
Steve Selsky: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K
Bryce Brentz: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 BB, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 K
Blake Swihart: 1-3, 1 2B
Hector Velazquez: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 0 K
Ben Taylor: 1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Kyle Martin: 2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 2 K
Austin Maddox: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
It certainly wasn’t the best of days for Velazquez — it’s never a totally positive day for a starter when they finish with zero strikeouts — but he did not at all implode. Given Henry Owens’ recent demotion, the Red Sox need their other starting pitching depth to stay on the right track. Meanwhile, Taylor is back from the disabled list and his first Triple-A appearance did not go well. Brentz is now up to 15 homers on the year with an .831 OPS and Selsky’s dinger breaks a bit of a cold streak he’s been going through of late.
Portland W 5-1
Danny Mars: 3-4, 1 BB, 2 R
Nick Longhi: 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 K
Michael Chavis: 0-4, 2 K, 1 E
Trey Ball: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 1 K
Luis Ysla: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Welcome to another edition of the Danny Mars Appreciation Show. The former sixth round pick is now hitting .315/.362/.423 on the season. On the flip side, it was the first really bad game for Chavis at Double-A. Obviously, there’s nothing to worry about after a single bad game, but it still isn’t fun to see. Finally, Ball’s line looks a whole lot like a typical line from a certain lefty who just joined him in Portland’s rotation.
Salem W 5-2
Tate Matheny: 1-4, 1 SB
Austin Rei: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 R
Josh Ockimey: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 R
Shaun Anderson: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K
It’s been a couple weeks since we saw Anderson in Salem’s rotation, and while it wasn’t a particularly dominant outing it’s nice to see him continuing to prevent runs and make it relatively deep into the outing. Between Low- and High-A this season, he’s pitched to a 3.50 ERA.
Greenville L 4-5
Lorenzo Cedrola: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI
Tyler Hill: 2-3, 2 RBI, 1 CS
Roldani Baldwin: 0-4
Cedrola must have read yesterday’s lines, because he sure got back on track on Monday. The Red Sox will want to see it for more than one game, but this lineup is much more exciting when Cedrola is at the top and hitting.
Lowell L 6-10
Aneury Tavarez: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI
Garrett Benge: 1-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI
GCL Red Sox W 3-2
Kevin Suarez: 3-4, 2 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI
Marino Campana: 2-4
Jose Gonzalez: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K
The Gulf Coast League kicked off on Monday and now all levels of the organization are in action. Some of the high school draftees will be on this roster soon, but for now we’ll just focus on players who are playing well, as the roster is mostly built up of DSL promotions and players who couldn’t get promoted from this level after last season.
DSL Red Sox L 1-7
Rafael Rincones: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K
