After selecting a college pitcher with their first pick in the 2017 MLB draft, the Red Sox went with a high school bat with their second. With the 63rd overall pick, Boston selected Cole Brannen, a high school outfielder from Georgia.

He is a left-handed bat who doesn’t have a huge power tool but has good bat control and plus speed. Brannen is committed to Georgia Southern, but it certainly doesn’t sound like there are any signability concerns as he has his heart set on going pro. It was a little surprising they didn’t select shortstop Nick Allen with this selection, but there is plenty to like about Brennan and it appears much safer that he will stay with the organization rather than bolting for school.

We’ll have much more on Brannen in the morning, but for now it is past my bedtime.
