Pawtucket G1 L 1-2
Deven Marrero: 0-2, 1 RBI, 1 K
Brock Holt: 1-3, 1 K
Rusney Castillo: 1-3
Steve Selsky: 1-3
Sam Travis: 1-3, 1 K
Blake Swihart: 1-3, 1 K
Bryce Brentz: 0-3
Jantzen Witte: 0-1, 1 BB, 1 CS
Pawtucket G2 L 1-3 (F/9)
Deven Marrero: 2-5, 2 K, 1 CS, 1 PO
Sam Travis: 2-4, 1 K
Bryce Brentz, 0-4, 2 K
Jantzen Witte: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 K, 1 E
Noe Ramirez: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Chandler Shepherd: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K
It was a rough day for Pawtucket, who played 16 innings of baseball on Saturday and still only managed to score two runs. Moreover, there wasn’t a notable player who hit an extra-base hit, and there wasn’t a notable starting pitcher in either game for Pawtucket. On the other hand, Brock Holt is one step closer to returning to the majors.
Portland L 5-6
Aneury Tavarez: 1-5, 2 K
Rafael Devers: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
Nick Longhi: 2-4, 1 R
Teddy Stankiewicz: 6 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 4 K
Luis Ysla: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Jamie Callahan: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Yesterday, I mentioned that Devers had been going through a mini-slump of three games that felt longer because of the Seadogs’ many rainouts. On Saturday, the top prospect’s first day in the cleanup spot, he smashed a home run in his first plate appearance. The slump was never anything to worry about, but it’s still nice to see him break out of it.
Salem L 3-10
Tate Matheny: 0-4
Josh Tobias: 3-4
Josh Ockimey: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 E
Michael Chavis: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K
Austin Rei: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Another day, another three hits for Tobias. The return for Clay Buchholz now has seven hits over his last two games and is hitting .345/.412/.494. Now, he is 24 and played the last month-plus of 2016 at the same level, so it’s not overly impressive. Still, you can’t ask for much more than what the Red Sox have gotten from Tobias.
Greenville W 4-1
Santiago Espinal: 3-5, 2 R, 1 SB
Tyler Hill: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 K
Bobby Dalbec: 0-4, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 E
Lorenzo Cedrola: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Mike Shawaryn: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K
Stephen Nogosek: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Unlike Devers, Dalbec’s mini slump has continued and that continuation included two more strikeouts. On the plus side, Greenville got the one win of the day in Boston’s farm system and it was thanks to good pitching. Shawaryn was awful in his first start of the year, but he’s been great since then. He’s now allowed a combined three runs over that stretch. Nogosek, meanwhile, continues to shine out of the bullpen and it’s only a matter of time before he’s put on the fast track.
