Red Sox Minor Lines: Michael Chavis is back

Michael Chavis returns from the DL, Nick Longhi’s off the schneid, and Lorenzo Cedrola gets another hit.

Portland L 3-8

Aneury Tavarez: 1-5, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB

Rafael Devers: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K

Nick Longhi: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI

Luis Ysla: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

It has been a rough start to the year for Longhi, but let’s hope his home run on Monday night will break him out of this slump. He’s a talented hitter who can put good swings on the ball when going right, but his lack of in-game power is what has held him back from taking the next step as a prospect over his pro career. The homer marked his first extra-base hit of the season, and even now he still only boasts a .452 OPS. Of course, the jump to Double-A is rarely easy.

Salem W 11-2

Tate Matheny: 3-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 K

Josh Tobias: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI

Josh Ockimey: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 R, 2 K

Michael Chavis: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 BB, 2 R, 1 K

Austin Rei: 1-3, 1 2B, 2 BB, 2 R, 1 K

There’s former first-round pick Michael Chavis back in the lineup after hitting the disabled list just one game into the season. This is a big year for the third baseman/designated hitter, as he’s repeating this level and if he doesn’t start to show some consistency with the bat he may never take that next step. He certainly showed the good part of his game on Monday as he was just one of many contributors to Salem’s lineup in this one.

Greenville L 3-5

Santiago Espinal: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB

Tyler Hill: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 CS

Bobby Dalbec: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K

Yoan Aybar: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 K

Lorenzo Cedrola: 1-4, 1 R

Darwinzon Hernandez: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 5 K

Aybar and Cedrola entered the year on similar levels as a couple of highly athletic, very raw outfielders entering their first year of full-season ball. It’s still incredibly early, but Cedrola looks like he’s taking a jump over Aybar already. The former’s OPS is about 200 points higher and he has a hit in each of his last eight games. Meanwhile, Hernandez had his first rough outing of the year. It’s obviously not ideal, but the lefty still has 20 strikeouts in his first 13 23 innings of work.
