Oh, Buck. A few hours after Baltimore manager Buck Showalter did his consistent, sillly needling-the-Red Sox-thing yesterday, the Sox held in there early against Orioles flamethrower Dylan Bundy only to explode late in the game for six runs on their way to an 8-1 win over their “rival” Orioles. “Rival” is in quotes because the Orioles aren’t really the Red Sox’ rivals, simply by virtue of not having been good enough for two decades, and it’s not a mystery why Showalter, a former Yankees manager, would decide Boston was his big bad enemy and not the Bronx Bombers. From that standpoint, despite his “humor,” since both the Yankees and Diamondbacks won the World Series the season after he left them, I’m glad he’s around to stop the Orioles from winning it all. He’s clearly in on it. You thought holding out Zach Britton out of the wild card game was an accident? WAKE UP, SHEEPLE.
At 7:10 p.m. tonight on NESN+, the Sox roll out virtually an identical starting nine to that of the game before for the first time this year, with only the catcher position flipped — hot-hitting Sandy Leon is back in the lineup, replacing hot-hitting Christian Vazquez, he of two knocks yesterday that landed just outside the fielding range of the Orioles outfield. Hit it where they ain’t, right? Steven Wright is on the hill, and he’s opposed by living punchline and punching bag Ubaldo Jimenez, whose specialty is letting you hit it over his outfielders. To that end, Mookie Betts is going deep. I feel it, and you heard it here first.
