Spring training is here, which means that baseball is officially back. We still have a few landmarks to pass by over the next week, though. Here’s a quick schedule of the key dates to know.
Pitchers and catchers report: February 13
That’s today! While some players have already reported — included all three of Boston’s aces — today is the day all pitchers and catchers must report to camp. It is the first glimpse we’ll see of Eduardo Rodriguez, and we’ll likely get more information on Drew Pomeranz and Steven Wright.
First official workout: February 14
Red Sox pitchers and catchers will celebrate Valentine’s Day by participating in team workouts for the first time as a group. We’ll be able to see Sale in a Red Sox uniform, and we’ll be able to see Wright and Pomeranz throw off flat ground. On the other side of things, expect to see a lot of Blake Swihart getting his work in behind the plate.
Position players report: February 16
Although they won’t start playing yet, it is at this point we’ll get Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley, Xander Bogaerts and Andrew Benintendi in the same room again. Expect much social media activity on this day.
First full workout: February 17
It is at this point we will see the entire roster on the field together again. Pablo Sandoval will be taking part in official practices. We’ll see what Brock Holt’s hair looks like. Maybe we’ll even catch some practice in the outfield dance department.
After this, it’s all practice and getting ready for some game action. They’ll be playing for the last few days of February and throughout March, though NESN won’t be televising all of the games. Still, we’ll be able to catch 17 games this spring between NESN and ESPN. Here is the full TV schedule, and we’ll try to have Gamethread coverage for each of these contests.
