One day after being shutout by the Athletics, the Red Sox are forced to turn to something of a B-team as they start their final interleague series of the season.
It's not as bad as it was that one day in Detroit, but this is certainly not the lineup at its best.
The Red Sox have done a lot of futzing around tied for first and right on the periphery, but never really managed to stick for long at the top. After yesterday's game--one the Red Sox have to feel they should have won both given the way the season series had gone and the performance they got out of Eduardo Rodriguez--they can't really be losing to the Padres with the decrepit remains of Edwin Jackson on the mound. Whether the Yankees do the Red Sox a favor and make this a chance to get back in first or make it just a question of their ability to keep up, the Sox need to isolate that loss.
First pitch is at 4:40 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
