Red Sox minor lines: Christian Vazquez swings the bat

Christian Vazquez may have convinced the Red Sox he can't hit enough to earn much playing time in the majors. Now he's trying to convince them he's worth another look.

Pawtucket Game 1 W 6-0 (In 7)

Rusney Castillo: 0-4, 2 K
Marco Hernandez: 2-3, 3B
Brennan Boesch: 0-2, BB, K
Christian Vazquez: 3-3, 2B

Justin Haley: 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

Pawtucket Game 2 L 3-6 (In 7)

Rusney Castillo: 2-4
Marco Hernandez: 0-3, 2 K
Brennan Boesch: 1-2, BB

Christian Vazquez' batting average is up 40 points in two games. If he'd done that a week ago, the Sox might not have gone out and picked up Bryan Holaday.

In a farm system which has seen arm after arm after arm fall to pieces this year, Justin Haley stands out as the rare model of consistent success. At this point it's too late in the year to really expect he'll make any contributions, but Pawtucket should either once again be fully-stocked with rotation depth (that will hopefully not implode this time), or at least serve as a good source for trade chips should the Sox need them to fill holes with sub-blockbuster deals.

Portland W 5-3

Mauricio Dubon: 2-4, 2B

The Moncada vigil continues.

Salem W 11-2

Joseph Monge: 4-5
Rafael Devers: 3-5, 3B, 2 K
Nick Longhi: 3-5, K

Michael Kopech: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 7 K

Kopech being Kopech, the lineup being the lineup. While all the walks are of course a bit concerning for Kopech, he's reminding me of the various electric closers who strike out just about everyone they face, which would be a fine outcome for him down the line if the control doesn't come around, which would also alleviate the need for a third legitimate offering and let him really hone his slider.

That's eleven hits in three games for Joseph Monge, and if one went a million innings, there's only 17 major leaguers with that many in all of August.

Greenville W 4-3

Luis Alexander Basabe: 1-3, HR, BB, K
Josh Ockimey: 0-4, K
Michael Chavis: 0-4, K
Kyri Washington: 1-3, BB, K

Roniel Raudes: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Marc Brakeman: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HR

Basabe has been slumping pretty badly for a little over a week after his great start to the second half. Hopefully this is a sign he's waking up.

Lowell L 0-6

C.J. Chatham: 1-3, K
Bobby Dalbec: 1-3, BB, K, SB
Yoan Aybar: 1-3, K

Brandon Workman: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HR

That's five innings for Workman now in his second attempt at returning from injury. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Sox gradually bump him up over the next couple of weeks. Maybe a Salem - Portland - Pawtucket progression.
