Red Sox vs. Dodgers lineups: Leon behind the plate for Wright

New, comments

Thus ends the Hanigan era, probably.

David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

With Sandy Leon behind the plate for Steven Wright, the writing is on the wall for Ryan Hanigan.

Lineup

BOSTON RED SOX LOS ANGELES DODGERS
Mookie Betts, RF Chase Utley, 2B
Dustin Pedroia, 2B Corey Seager, SS
Xander Bogaerts, SS Justin Turner, 3B
Hanley Ramirez, 1B Josh Reddick, RF
Jackie Bradley Jr., CF Adrian Gonzalez, 1B
Aaron Hill, 3B Yasmani Grandal, C
Sandy Leon, C Howie Kendrick, LF
Bryce Brentz, LF Joc Pederson, CF
Steven Wright, P Scott Kazmir, P

It comes as no great surprise that Hanigan is going to be leaving with Holaday coming in, but this seems to be pretty clear confirmation, with this being just the second time Leon has been tasked with catching the knuckleballer (and first when it was actually planned). It will be interesting to see how he does with the pitch, but Hanigan wasn't particularly great with it to begin with, so the bar is set fairly low.

With the Sox in a National League park, they'll also be without David Ortiz. I'd say that's not what the struggling lineup needs right now, but frankly, Ortiz has been contributing to that, making this a pretty perfect time to get him a couple days off.

Meanwhile, Andrew Benintendi is set to start his third of four games since being called up on the bench. Yes, the Red Sox are platooning him, no it's still not the most sensible move in the world. Benintendi has shown no real signs of being a platoon-only bat in the minors, but one really good way to make him more likely to need a partner in 2017 is to deny him the experience now.

Hell, this thing could persist. Benintendi ends up looking like a rookie against lefties next year while hitting righties because he hasn't seen any at the major league level. Then he gets a platoon partner because that's interpreted as him needing one rather than just needing a bit more experience. Thus denying him the experience and so on and so forth. Sometimes when you pretend a guy has a deficiency, you actually cause it. Just end it now, man.

First pitch is at 10:10 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
