It's just Xander's fourth game off of the season, but it comes less than a week after his last. On the one hand, the Red Sox can hardly afford to go without one of their best players in Bogaerts. On the other, they've kind of been doing just that since the month began given Xander's .367 OPS in August. If getting Bogaerts back to his best means a few games for Holt at short, then it's certainly worth it. Hell, even if it means a full month of that, there's just no real cost if the Xander they're giving up is the one they've seen these past two weeks.
One does wonder, though, how long the likes of Andrew Benintendi and especially Sandy Leon are going to stay at the bottom of the order. John Farrell has done his one-for-one substitution thing with Holt in Bogaerts' spot at number two, And while one game of that just isn't going to make much of a difference, having two of the team's most productive hitters at the moment batting at the end of the lineup is a bit odd. For Benintendi, at least, there's not much of a sample to it. But even if we can all agree that Sandy Leon is leading such a charmed life that it's hard to imagine it continuing apace, maybe he at least should get a bit of a bump?
Oh well. Either way, the Sox are actually going for a sweep today, which is a nice change from trying desperately not to lose another series. First pitch is 1:35 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
