Red Sox vs. Yankees lineups: Ortiz lives!

New, comments

After a nasty scare, Ortiz is in the lineup Thursday against the Yankees.

David Ortiz is in the lineup one day after having to be helped off the field in the ninth inning of Wednesday night's loss.

On the one hand, everything that sucked about the actual results of last night's game still suck. On the other hand, man, if having David Ortiz' career flash before your eyes doesn't provide some perspective.

While Ortiz is in, Mookie is not, with his calf tightness apparently giving the Red Sox reason enough to give him a day off. That, at least, didn't sound like the sort of thing we should really be too concerned about, though, with Ortiz' return easily outweighing any Betts concerns.

Positive injury news aside, though, the Red Sox really need to win this one. Losing a home series to the Yankees after a mediocre road trip after 2-5 against the Twins and Tigers? I don't care if that leaves them still within striking distance of the East--it's just too damn hard to look at a team that does that after all that happened in June and think they're a winner in waiting.

First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
