Red Sox minor lines: Anderson Espinoza meets his match

New, 17 comments

Anderson Espinoza finally found a challenge after skipping over Lowell entirely to face Low-A competition in Greenville.

Pawtucket L 1-2

Deven Marrero: 1-4
Marco Hernandez: 0-4
Garin Cecchini: 0-3

Pawtucket W 6-2

Marco Hernandez: 2-3, 2 BB
Garin Cecchini: 0-3, BB

Pat Light: 0.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Well, any hopes that Pat Light might play the role of bullpen savior in 2016 hit a bit of a speedbump since his promotion to Pawtucket. A 5.18 ERA with a 35:26 K:BB would suggest that, even if he has a role to play in the future, he definitely needs more time to get up to speed before tackling the majors.

Portland L 0-3

Manuel Margot: 2-4, CS
Carlos Asuaje: 0-3, K

Portland L 9-11

Manuel Margot: 3-5, HR, BB, 3 SB
Sam Travis: 1-2, 2B, 3 BB, K, SB

Oh, hi there Manuel Margot. This is the first homer he's produced since June 27, which at the time capped off a span of three homers in eleven days. It's honestly been a pretty uninspiring season from the 20-year-old outfielder after getting off to a strong post-promotion start, excepting the fact that anything above complete failure is somewhat impressive for someone his age in Double-A.

Salem W 6-3

Trey Ball: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K

Salem L 2-6

Ty Buttrey: 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HR

Trey Ball gets one last dose of hope to keep you semi-hooked for another season. Ty Buttrey does not, but his season as a whole didn't need it nearly so badly.

Greenville L 3-4 (In 7)

Yoan Moncada: 0-4, K
Michael Chavis: 1-3, 2B, K
Rafael Devers: 2-3, 2B
Andrew Benintendi: 1-3, 2 K
Nick Longhi: 1-3, 2B
Javier Guerra: 1-3

Anderson Espinoza: 3.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

Greenville W 5-4 (In 7)

Yoan Moncada: 1-3, BB, K
Michael Chavis: 0-3, BB, K
Rafael Devers: 1-3
Andrew Benintendi: 2-3, BB
Nick Longhi: 0-4, K
Javier Guerra: 2-4, K

Well, good as Anderson Espinoza is, he didn't quite manage the clean double-jump transition. Frankly, I didn't expect him to struggle before High-A given his fastball, and while this may just be a blip on the radar, it's hard to completely pass off the fact that his first rough start comes after being bumped up from GCL to Greenville. Whether he needs it or not, he'll have an offseason to work on it, then come back and resume his rampage through the minors.

Lowell L 2-3

Mitchell Gunsolus: 0-4, K
Josh Ockimey: 0-4, K

Lowell L 6-12

Victor Acosta: 2-4, 2B
Josh Ockimey: 2-4, 2 2B
Tucker Tubbs: 0-4, K
Tate Matheny: 2-4

Travis Lakins: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K

Lakins' mini debut remains scoreless. His first runs will come in 2016.
