Red Sox vs. Orioles lineups: Sox out to escape cellar against Orioles

New, 11 comments

The Red Sox last place in the A.L. East, but with a win tonight and a little bit of luck, they could find themselves tied for (an admittedly meaningless) third.

The Red Sox will be without Dustin Pedroia again Monday night as they send Eduardo Rodriguez to the mound to start a series against the Baltimore Orioles.

BOSTON RED SOX BALTIMORE ORIOLES
Mookie Betts - CF Nolan Reimold - DH
Josh Rutledge - 2B Manny Machado - 3B
Xander Bogaerts - SS Chris Davis - 1B
David Ortiz - DH Adam Jones - CF
Travis Shaw - 1B Steve Pearce - LF
Pablo Sandoval - 3B Jonathan Schoop - 2B
Rusney Castillo - LF Caleb Joseph - C
Blake Swihart - C J.J. Hardy - SS
Jackie Bradley - RF Dariel Alvarez - RF
Eduardo Rodriguez - LHP Kevin Gausman - RHP

It's good to see the Sox are taking it slow with Pedroia after his return from the disabled list given that there's absolutely no reason to rush. While it's unfortunate that we've come to the point of having to acknowledge it, with Pedroia it really is all about health. For a while it looked like this would be the year where a fully-healthy Pedey got his groove back, hitting with the power he used to have back in 2012 and earlier. But the bug bit again in June, and a July return served only to drop his OPS by some 45 points before he headed back on the DL after six games.

At this point, of course, nothing Pedroia does in the last 20 games of the season will make a difference in terms of pushing the Red Sox into October. That ship has long since sailed. All we can do is hope he's still the Pedroia we saw in the first half when 2016 rolls around.

First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
