The Red Sox will have Alejandro De Aza in right field Wednesday night because for some reason they don't seem to care about their future! Yay!
I don't get it, I really don't. What are the returns realistically going to be on a guy like De Aza at the waiver deadline, even if he manages to keep performing? Some low-level lottery ticket? Maybe, if they're lucky. Why would that be available on August 31st and not a month earlier? And even if that trade is available, is it really worth a full month of playing time for Castillo, whose role in 2016 can't really be certain based on what we've seen from him thus far?
At least with the Mike Napoli/Travis Shaw situation, unceremoniously dumping Napoli would be something of a feel-bad situation and Shaw isn't likely to play a significant role in 2016. But that's hardly the case with De Aza and Castillo. This team isn't going to know what it needs to do in the offseason, and all they'll have to show for it, at best, is some maybe future reliever in Greenville.
First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN, ESPN, and WEEI.
