The Red Sox will have Mookie Betts back in the lineup and David Ortiz at first base Tuesday night as they head to Miami for...sigh...National League baseball.
So, the good news is obviously the return of Mookie Betts, whose presence as one of the few bright spots of this season has been sorely missed since he went over the bullpen wall against the White Sox. The other good news, slightly less obvious, is that Ortiz' presence at first base in National League ballparks is a much easier decision with no actual first base starter in Boston at the moment.
With Mookie Betts back and Hanley Ramirez still banged up, the Sox will shift Jackie Bradley Jr. over to left field. It might seem a waste of his defensive talents, and certainly it is, to play him in left, but the fact of the matter is that Mookie Betts isn't giving up that spot to much of anyone, much less a player whose role with the team is far from set. If the Sox were headed back to Fenway, with its cavernous right field, it would be interesting to see if the Sox switched Bradley and Castillo or not, as Castillo playing right over Bradley might signal that they have more faith in him going forward (which would hardly be a surprise).
The bad news: Steven Wright will be picking up a bat. What fun.
First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
