Red Sox minor lines: The return of Honk

New, 18 comments

Henry Owens seems to be back.

Pawtucket L 0-1

Allen Craig: 0-3, K
Travis Shaw: 1-3, K
Garin Cecchini: 0-3
Sean Coyle: 0-3

Henry Owens: 7.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
Pat Light: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

The Return of the Honk is now nearly a month deep. Hopefully that's because the curveball has been rounding into form--and there have at least been positive reports on that--rather than him just going back to relying on the changeup.

Portland L 4-7

Shane Victorino: 1-3, 2B
Carlos Asuaje: 0-3
Sam Travis: 0-4
Manuel Margot: 1-4

Justin Haley: 3 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR

Justin Haley follows up his best stretch of the year with an unfortunate disaster. He hasn't had that many games which look like complete implosions, but far too few innings to his name. He has yet to record an out in the seventh.

Salem L 4-11

Wendell Rijo: 2-4, 2B, K, CS

It' was a pretty terrible month for Wendell Rijo, but with three multi-hit games in his last four, he's at least finished it on a hot streak.

Greenville L 1-8

Michael Chavis: 1-4, 2 K
Rafael Devers: 0-3, BB, K
Javier Guerra: 0-3, BB

Lowell W 7-6 (In 10)

Luis Alexander Basabe: 2-5, 2 HR, 2 K
Tucker Tubbs: 0-4, BB, K
Josh Ockimey: 0-5, 3 K, E
Victor Acosta: 2-4, K
Mitchell Gunsolus: 0-4, K

After starting the season on an eight-game hitting streak, Josh Ockimey is now 0-for in his last two. But Basabe is here to fill the vacuum. He's got early-season OBP troubles, but two homers tonight has his SLG up over .500 for the moment.

GCL Red Sox W 5-2

Trent Kemp: 1-4, BB, K

Anderson Espinoza: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Espinoza's second game stateside goes almost exactly as well as his first, but with four more strikeouts to show for it. With guys this young coming up through the DSL/GCL, it inevitably gets scary around the time they get to Salem and the off-speed pitches start getting put to the test. But being able to breeze through these lower levels on a strong fastball and good control bases on solid mechanics is an excellent foundation to build up from.
