David Ortiz is on the bench against the left-handed Scott Kazmir Friday night as the Sox open a weekend series against the Athletics in Fenway Park.
It's hard to say whether or not we're at the point yet where David Ortiz is actually a full-on platoon DH. But given that is .282 OPS against lefties is now based on a sample of 67 at bats, it's getting harder and harder to justify including him in the lineup when there's a southpaw on the mound. Not to go to an area nobody is particularly interested in visiting, either, but platoon DHs aren't exactly a thing in the game today, particularly at Ortiz' price when you've got a glove as bad as Hanley Ramirez' out in left. There's an obvious solution here, be it for 2015 or 2016, it just sucks to even suggest it.
For tonight, at least, Wade Miley will have the benefit of Alejandro De Aza in left, as the newest member of the Red Sox makes his debut, and not have to worry about what might have otherwise been a fairly automatic out in the middle of the lineup until the bullpen showed up.
First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
