Red Sox vs. Twins lineups: David Ortiz drops to fifth

It's been a rough month for David Ortiz, leaving John Farrell with little choice but to move him down in the lineup.

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

David Ortiz will bat fifth Tuesday night, moving down in the lineup in favor of Pablo Sandoval after a dismal month of May.

BOSTON RED SOX MINNESOTA TWINS
Dustin Pedroia - 2B Brian Dozier - 2B
Mookie Betts - CF Torii Hunter - DH
Pablo Sandoval - 3B Joe Mauer - 1B
Hanley Ramirez - LF Trevor Plouffe - 3B
David Ortiz - DH Kurt Suzuki - C
Mike Napoli - 1B Eduardo Escobar - LF
Xander Bogaerts - SS Eddie Rosario - RF
Rusney Castillo - RF Aaron Hicks - CF
Sandy Leon - C Danny Santana - SS
Clay Buchholz - RHP Mike Pelfrey - RHP

We're clearly into open tinkering season when it comes to the Red Sox lineup. John Farrell seems content to throw different orders at the wall until something sticks, which is perhaps not such a bad idea when it means moving David Ortiz, who has a .572 OPS on the month, out of the third spot. Maybe the "demotion" sparks something in Ortiz, or maybe it just gives Pablo Sandoval more chances to hit with men on base. Either way, something had to change there.

Meanwhile, we've got Rusney Castillo back in after getting Monday off, and Sandy Leon catching Clay Buchholz, which is pretty much a thing at this point. Strange how Clay is always the non-conformist when it comes to the catcher.

First pitch is at 8:10 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
