Red Sox vs. Rays: Sandy Leon debuts

Sandy Leon will make his first start in a Red Sox uniform Tuesday afternoon against the Rays.

The Red Sox will get their first look at their new catcher Sandy Leon as he starts behind the plate and bats ninth Tuesday afternoon against the Rays.

Boston Red Sox (14-10)

  1. Brock Holt, 3B
  2. Rusney Castillo, RF
  3. Daniel Nava, LF
  4. Allen Craig, 1B
  5. Jackie Bradley Jr., CF
  6. Jemile Weeks, 2B
  7. Quintin Berry, DH
  8. Deven Marrero, SS
  9. Sandy Leon, C

Starting Pitcher -- Edward Mujica

While Leon is starting with the backups one day after Quintero played with the starters, at this point there's no time to be lining up appearances with Opening Day roster intentions. There's a limited amount of playing time available, and yesterday Leon wasn't settled in with the team yet while Quintero was. Now Leon is here, and so Leon will play. Not much more to it than that.

What is slightly interesting is the continued presence of Deven Marrero, even after someone like Garin Cecchini was sent down to minor league camp. Marrero is coming off something of a breakout 2014 campaign, but struggled mightily after a mid-season promotion to Pawtucket, which would suggest he's further away from the big leagues than some others who didn't last nearly so long. Maybe they just forgot?

First pitch is at 1:05 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN and the MLB Network, with the latter coming on delay.
