After a hard-fought campaign that started all the way back in February, Joe Kelly's quest to capture the Cy Young award he promised to win fell short Wednesday night, with Dallas Keuchel being given the honors for the American League in 2015.
It was, however, pretty close. Let's just go down a list of some of the important statistics here:
Keuchel | Kelly | |
IP | 232.0 | 134.1 |
ERA | 2.48 | 4.82 |
WHIP | 1.02 | 1.44 |
K/9 | 8.4 | 7.4 |
BB/9 | 2.0 | 3.3 |
HR/9 | 0.66 | 1.00 |
In fact, on further review, I'm not sure what they were thinking giving this thing to Keuchel over Kelly. Sure, Keuchel pitched a whole lot more than Kelly, but other than that and K/9, Kelly has the higher figure in WHIP, BB/9, and HR/9. Hell, he almost doubled up the supposed best pitcher in the AL in ERA!
Well, we won't take this one lying down. Here in Boston we know that talking big is more important than pitching big. And also that Joe Kelly Has Great Stuff™. We'll just start our own awards, with Kelly the first man to take down the "Joe Kelly Award for Being Really Good At Throwing Baseballs" if we can't think of something with a snappier acronym. We'll put it in the trophy case right next to Hanley Ramirez' Gold Foil Wrapped Chocolate Glove and the monument to Jonny Gomes' 20 WAR season.
