It sounds like they're in for quite a bit of rain down in St. Louis both tonight and tomorrow, but should baseball be played, Joe Kelly will make his Red Sox debut against his former team.
|BOSTON RED SOX||ST. LOUIS CARDINALS|
|Brock Holt - 3B||Matt Carpenter - 3B|
|Dustin Pedroia - 2B||Kolten Wong - 2B|
|Yoenis Cespedes - LF||Matt Holliday - LF|
|Mike Napoli - 1B||Matt Adams - 1B|
|Daniel Nava - RF||Jhonny Peralta - SS|
|Xander Bogaerts - SS||A.J. Pierzynski - C|
|Christian Vazquez - C||Oscar Taveras - RF|
|Mookie Betts - CF||Jon Jay - CF|
|Joe Kelly - RHP||Shelby Miller - RHP|
David Ortiz' absence isn't exactly a surprise given that he played first base yesterday. The Red Sox would prefer he see as little time there as possible all things considered, making him the easy choice for odd-man-out today.
It also means improved infield defense for Kelly, who will be playing without Jackie Bradley Jr. behind him in center. For the second straight day, Bradley is on the bench, with Mookie Betts taking over in center and Brock Holt shifting down to third base in place of Will Middlebrooks. His hot streak having run out, Bradley was mired in an 0-for-21 slump, so perhaps the Sox have taken him out of action to try and figure out what's changed and why.
First pitch may or may not be at 8:15 p.m. ET depending on how the whole rain thing turns out with broadcasts on NESN, ESPN, and WEEI.
