Red Sox minor lines: And who are you, Gabe Speier?

New, 24 comments

19th round pick Gabe Speier wasn't exactly heralded heading into the season, but he's been destroying the GCL in his first real professional season.

Pawtucket W 9-3

Jackie Bradley Jr.: 3-6, 2B
Alex Hassan: 3-5, 2 2B, K
Bryce Brentz: 2-5, HR, K
Travis Shaw: 1-4, BB
Garin Cecchini: 2-5, 2B, 3 K
Deven Marrero: 2-5, 2 2B, K

Henry Owens: 6.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 8 K

Quite the offensive night from the Paw Sox as a whole. Henry Owens' walk rate has been a concern at times, and this game is one of those, but altogether 3.35/9 isn't the worst, and it's actually a marked improvement over what we've seen from him in his career-to-date. Hopefully he takes another step forward in that department come 2015.

Portland L 1-4

Sean Coyle: 1-4, HR, K
Keury De La Cruz: 0-4, 2 K

Eduardo Rodriguez: 7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K

The Sea Dogs' winning streak is over, but at least it came on another ridiculous night for Eduardo Rodriguez, who has produced pretty much nothing but since coming over at the trade deadline.

Salem L 4-5

Carlos Asuaje: 0-1, 3 BB, K, A
Manuel Margot: 1-4, SB

Simon Mercedes: 5 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K

Greenville W 2-1

Cole Sturgeon: 1-3, BB, K
Tzu-Wei Lin: 1-4
Wendell Rijo: 0-4, K
Sam Travis: 1-3, 2B, BB
Danny Mars: 0-3

GCL Red Sox W 4-2

Rafael Devers: 2-4, 2B
Michael Chavis: 0-3, BB
Luis Alexander Basabe: 0-3, BB, K
Josh Ockimey: 0-3, K
Trenton Kemp: 1-1, 2 BB

Gabe Speier: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K

Gabe Speier, the Red Sox' 19th-round draft pick in 2013, has been putting up some remarkable numbers in his first real professional season. It's only been 29 innings so far, but it's 29 innings with five earned runs, and a 26:1 K:BB. Not bad for a first go-around at age 19. One to watch in 2015.
