Red Sox vs. Angels: Mookie Betts starts in center

Jackie Bradley Jr. is gone, leaving Mookie Betts a chance to make a name for himself in the majors.

Jared Wickerham

The Red Sox will have Mookie Betts in center field, fresh from Pawtucket as they send Brandon Workman to the mound to open a series against the Angels in Fenway Park.

Today's Lineups

Kole Calhoun - RF Brock Holt - RF
Mike Trout - CF Dustin Pedroia - 2B
Albert Pujols - DH David Ortiz - DH
Howie Kendrick - 2B Yoenis Cespedes - LF
Erick Aybar - SS Mike Napoli - 1B
Brennan Boesch - LF Will Middlebrooks - 3B
David Freese - 3B Xander Bogaerts - SS
Efren Navarro - 1B Mookie Betts - CF
Chris Iannetta - C Christian Vazquez - C
C.J. Wilson - LHP Brandon Workman - RHP

It's depressing to see Jackie Bradley Jr. headed back down to the minors after a long, arduous season in Boston, but getting Betts some consistent playing time in the majors is a positive. He hasn't exactly torn things up in his first 40-odd at bats in the big leagues, but the combination of a small sample size and the on-off nature of his appearances makes that hard to put much stock in.

To say nothing of the fact that he's a 21-year-old rookie.

First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
