Red Sox vs. White Sox: Brandon Workman gets a new batterymate

Brandon Workman will take the mound Tuesday night, but not with his usual batterymate behind the plate.

The Red Sox will have Mookie Betts back in center and Brandon Workman on the mound as they try to rebound from Monday night's 4-0 loss against the White Sox.

Today's Lineups

CHICAGO WHITE SOX BOSTON RED SOX
Adam Eaton - CF Brock Holt - RF
Gordon Beckham - 2B Dustin Pedroia - 2B
Jose Abreu - 1B David Ortiz - DH
Adam Dunn - DH Mike Napoli - 1B
Alexei Ramirez - SS Jonny Gomes - LF
Conor Gillaspie - 3B Xander Bogaerts - 3B
Dayan Viciedo - RF David Ross - C
A. De Aza - LF Stephen Drew - SS
Tyler Flowers - C Mookie Betts - CF
John Danks - LHP Brandon Workman - RHP

Betts' presence comes at the cost of Jackie Bradley Jr. as John Farrell continues to shuffle players into and out of the lineup. One expects that this strange juggling act will not last long, at least in its current incarnation. With the trade deadline some three weeks away and the Red Sox now firmly in a selling role, the Sox will be able to determine what pieces they can get value from, and which ones just need to be cleared away to make room for a more consistent lineup of young players we can expect to factor into 2015.

Trades or not, though, Brandon Workman has established himself as a member of the rotation for the time being. Now he just has to show that was the right decision. His last start was quite the mess, with a weak-hitting Cubs team producing six runs against him in just four innings of work. The Red Sox will certainly need more from him tonight if yesterday's offensive performance is any indication.

Perhaps to that end, David Ross will be starting behind the plate tonight. He's largely been the personal catcher for Jon Lester and Jake Peavy of late, with Workman only ever having thrown to him in relief before. It will be interesting to see if the defensively superior Ross leads to any improvement from Workman over his performances with A.J. Pierzynski.

First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. EST with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
