Red Sox minor lines: Deven Marrero back on the rise

New, comments

Deven Marrero has been a little up-and-down in 2014. Right now, he's very much on the rise.

Pawtucket L 0-4

Mookie Betts: 1-4, BB, SB, E
Will Middlebrooks: 0-2, BB, 2 K
Garin Cecchini: 1-2, K
Travis Shaw: 0-3, BB, 2 K
Christian Vazquez: 1-3, 2B, BB
Alex Hassan: 0-4, K

Matt Barnes: 5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Pawtucket L 4-5

Mookie Betts: 1-5, K
Will Middlebrooks: 2-4, K
Travis Shaw: 0-4, K
Garin Cecchini: 0-4, K
Alex Hassan: 0-4, 2 K

Allen Webster: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR
Rich Hill: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Allen Webster has been pretty consistently good this year, but he's having some very real home run problems right now, having allowed one in five of his last six games. The rest of his peripherals are all headed in the right direction this past month, but the problems we've seen from Webster in years past involved mistake pitches, so this could be an actual issue.

Portland W 5-1 (In 7)

Deven Marrero: 1-2, BB, K
Blake Swihart: 1-3
Sean Coyle: 0-2, BB, K
Keury De La Cruz: 0-2, BB, K

Brian Johnson: 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HR (CG)

Portland W 3-2 (In 7)

Deven Marrero: 2-2, SB
Blake Swihart: 2-3, HR, K, SB
Sean Coyle: 1-3, E
Keury De La Cruz: 0-3

Noe Ramirez: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Portland L 4-5

Deven Marrero: 3-4
Blake Swihart: 0-4, K
Sean Coyle: 0-3, BB, 2 K
Keury De La Cruz: 2-4

We're seeing a rash of complete (short) games in Portland, with Brian Johnson having joined the fun now. So far, in nine Portland starts, he's yet to allow more than three earned runs in a game.

Less consistent has been Deven Marrero, who has seen his season numbers bounce all over the place. Right now they're certainly on the upswing, though, with a ridiculous 12 hits in his last 20 at bats. Boston was awfully aggressive with him, bumping him up to Portland before he was really impressing in Salem last year. But at least three months into the season it looks like they were right to trust him to adjust.

Greenville L 6-7 (In 11)

Forrestt Allday: 3-5, 2 CS
Tzu-Wei Lin: 2-6, CS, E
Wendell Rio: 1-5, 2B, 2 K, SB, E
Manuel Margot: 2-5

Trey Ball: 4 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Greenville W 7-3

Forrestt Allday: 0-3, 2 BB
Wendell Rijo: 0-4, K

Forrestt Allday is what he is, with both a .399 OBP and SLG. He's not going to hit for power, which makes the question whether he can really maintain this sort of production at the plate while he's still striking out in about a quarter of his at bats. Usually when 138 of those produce zero homers, you have to make more consistent contact.

Lowell L 0-11

Nick Longhi: 0-4

Lowell L 1-2

Sam Travis: 1-4, K
Nick Longhi: 1-4, 2 K

GCL Red Sox W 5-4

Jordon Austin: 0-3, BB, K

DSL Red Sox W 3-2

Luis Alejandro Basabe: 0-3, BB, K
Rafael Devers: 0-3
Luis Alexander Basabe: 0-2, 2 BB

With the mutual day off Sunday, today would seem like the logical date for a Devers GCL debut.
