Red Sox vs. Athletics: Try, try again against Tommy Milone

New, comments

The Red Sox haven't been able to hit the broad side of a barn for better than a week now. But the schedule will make them try again against Tommy Milone.

Lance Iversen-USA TODAY Sports

The Red Sox can only hope to dodge a four-game sweep Sunday afternoon as they send Jon Lester to the mound against the Oakland Athletics.

Today's Lineups

Brock Holt - RF Craig Gentry - CF
Xander Bogaerts - 3B Jed Lowrie - SS
Dustin Pedroia - 2B Yoenis Cespedes - LF
David Ortiz - DH Josh Donaldson - DH
Mike Napoli - 1B Derek Norris - C
Jonny Gomes - LF Kyle Blanks - 1B
J. Herrera - SS A. Callaspo - 3B
David Ross - C Stephen Vogt - RF
Jackie Bradley - CF Nick Punto - 2B

After finally scoring more than two runs on Friday night, the Red Sox went ahead and averaged that out yesterday with a one-run effort (that probably should have been zero) against Jesse Chavez. Today they'll have Xander Bogaerts back in the order, but that hasn't really made much of a difference in recent weeks.

The lineup is right-handed heavy, at least, against the lefty Tommy Milone, and Milone's numbers aren't quite as good as the rest of Oakland's impressive rotation. But Chavez, though he seems to be a legitimately good pitcher, was not at his best last night at all, and the Red Sox still couldn't do anything even against his hanging breaking balls.

First pitch is at 4:05 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
