The Red Sox can only hope to dodge a four-game sweep Sunday afternoon as they send Jon Lester to the mound against the Oakland Athletics.
After finally scoring more than two runs on Friday night, the Red Sox went ahead and averaged that out yesterday with a one-run effort (that probably should have been zero) against Jesse Chavez. Today they'll have Xander Bogaerts back in the order, but that hasn't really made much of a difference in recent weeks.
The lineup is right-handed heavy, at least, against the lefty Tommy Milone, and Milone's numbers aren't quite as good as the rest of Oakland's impressive rotation. But Chavez, though he seems to be a legitimately good pitcher, was not at his best last night at all, and the Red Sox still couldn't do anything even against his hanging breaking balls.
First pitch is at 4:05 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
