The Red Sox will have Grady Sizemore in center field again Tuesday night against the Orioles, marking the second straight night Jackie Bradley Jr. has been left warming the bench.
So let's talk about this whole Sizemore - Bradley thing.
There's no denying it: Boston's outfield situation is a wreck, and center field is the worst of the worst. Neither Jackie Bradley Jr. nor Grady Sizemore is hitting, which might make one wonder if it really matters which one of them takes the field in any given game. Well, let's review what each brings to the table:
Jackie Bradley Jr.
- A strong glove in center field
- The potential to help future Red Sox teams if he develops--something which does not happen sitting on the bench
Grady Sizemore
- A glove that would be strong in center field if it was still 2007. It is 2014.
- Insight into the fleeting nature of youth and health
- Sadness, generally
Simply put, more than perhaps any other player on the team, there is no point to Grady Sizemore as a member of the Red Sox. He does not provide value today, tomorrow, or two years from now. It's the sad reality of the situation, but any at bat given to him over pretty much any other player on the team that could help them to either develop as a player or as a trade asset is basically a wasted resource.
First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. EST with broadcasts on NESN, WEEI, and the MLB Network.
