Red Sox vs. Rangers: Ryan Roberts makes Boston debut

Ryan Roberts will start his first game with his new team as the Red Sox go for .500 against the Rangers.

Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

Ryan Roberts is in Boston's lineup for the first time Tuesday night as the Red Sox send Felix Doubront to the mound against Martin Perez and the Texas Rangers.

Boston Red Sox (3-4)

  2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
  3. David Ortiz, DH
  4. Mike Napoli, 1B
  5. Grady Sizemore, CF
  6. Xander Bogaerts, SS
  7. A.J. Pierzynski, C
  8. Ryan Roberts, 3B
  9. Jackie Bradley Jr., RF

Starting Pitcher -- Felix Doubront

Texas Rangers (3-4)

  1. Shin-Soo Choo, LF
  2. Elvis Andrus, SS
  3. Prince Fielder, 1B
  4. Adrian Beltre, DH
  5. Alex Rios, RF
  6. Donnie Murphy, 2B
  7. Michael Choice, CF
  8. Robinson Chirinos, C
  9. Josh Wilson, 3B

Starting Pitcher -- Martin Perez

Also in the lineup are Jackie Bradley Jr. and A.J. Pierzynski, reprising their roles after big nights on Monday. For Bradley, there's no real platoon alternative, but for A.J. Pierzynski, there's David Ross. So why Pierzynski? Well, with the Rangers having a lefty lined up for Wednesday as well, Ross was very likely going to start one of these games, even if John Farrell wants to keep him away from back-to-back games. If indeed that's the case, then it makes sense to give him the opportunity to keep up momentum after his 3-for-4 performance.

Other than that, it's about what might be expected against a southpaw, with Jonny Gomes in the leadoff spot for now, and now Ryan Roberts starting at third base.

First pitch is at 6:10 p.m. with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
