Red Sox injury update: David Ross, Shane Victorino, Matt Barnes

There's plenty of injury news for the Red Sox. Which isn't a great thing.

The Grapefruit League schedule has barely begun, but already the Red Sox have more than their fair share of bumps and bruises. Here's the latest on the players dealing with injuries:

  • A.J. Pierzynski, who once again dealt with ankle issues in Monday's game against the Pirates, will be shut down for another few days. Given that the first stretch of rest didn't stick, we might expect the Red Sox to be extra careful with him this time to avoid making the situation worse.
  • David Ross, Pierzynski's backup, is also dealing with an injury in the same region, having received an MRI on his left foot. The good news is that those scans have apparently revealed nothing worse than an inflamed tendon. He'll get the same treatment as Pierzynski, taking a few days off before returning to game action.
  • Shane Victorino has been kept out of the first week's worth of games as he works on his core strength, but it sounds like he's getting close to making his spring debut. He won't be held out of any workout activities Tuesday, and should be ready to go before long.
  • Jake Peavy is back to throwing despite the cut on his finger. If all goes well, he'll have a bullpen session sans-glove Wednesday.
  • The Red Sox have shut down pitching prospect Matt Barnes due to shoulder stiffness, but John Farrell says the team is just being cautious, and there's no structural issue.
