Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling announced today in a statement to ESPN that he has been diagnosed with Cancer.
There were few details provided on Schilling's illness. This is not the first time that the three-time World Series champion has dealt with health issues in his post-playing life, having suffered a heart attack in November 2011. There is also no word on whether Schilling will continue to provide commentary for Sunday Night Baseball.
In the years since his retirement, Curt Schilling has stayed connected with the team. This hasn't always endeared him to the fanbase given his outspoken nature and role in the media. However, as the author of the infamous Bloody Sock game and so many other performances, Schilling will always have a special place in the hearts of the Boston fanbase.
Because of the part he played in breaking the curse, because of his determination to do whatever he could to take the mound for the Red Sox, and simply because he is a human being, we send our thoughts and prayers to Curt Schilling and his family. This is not the first hurdle he's faced, and it will not be the last he overcomes.
