Red Sox vs. Twins lineups: Jonny Gomes is leading off (and that's really weird)

Jonny Gomes is leading off and oh God spring training why do you do weird stuff like this.

Elsa

The Mayor's Cup is back, and John Farrell is once again putting the team's best foot forward for the spring training tournament. Or near enough to it, anyways. The Red Sox will field six starters from 2013 along with old regulars Jonny Gomes and David Ross, resulting in a lineup that we could see during the regular season if everything went horribly, horribly wrong.

Boston Red Sox (2-0)

  1. Jonny Gomes, LF
  2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
  3. David Ortiz, DH
  4. Mike Napoli, 1B
  5. Xander Bogaerts, SS
  6. Will Middlebrooks, 3B
  7. David Ross, C
  8. Jackie Bradley Jr., CF
  9. Bryce Brentz, RF

Starting Pitcher -- Anthony Ranaudo

Alright, so maybe "horribly wrong" is an exaggeration. More...marginally wrong. Presumably, if we were to see this order in June, Jackie Bradley Jr. would not be performing well enough to have earned the leadoff spot. Shane Victorino is clearly hurt in this scenario, and Grady Sizemore likely with him to allow Bryce Brentz a starting spot with the big league team. Maybe, just maybe, there's a lefty on the mound, explaining the presence of Gomes at the top. We can only hypothetically hope, because Jonny Gomes is many things, but a leadoff hitter is not one of them.

It just feels wrong.

In all seriousness, though, the main things to note here are another day with Pedroia batting second, and another high placement for Xander Bogaerts. John Farrell would very much like to put his faith in the young shortstop, it seems. He just needs Xander to give him the excuse. He went 0-for-2 yesterday, but the third at bat is certainly not too late a time to get started in earnest.

Oh, the Twins are playing too, I guess...

Minnesota Twins (0-0)

  1. Alex Presley, CF
  2. Brian Dozier, 2B
  3. Trevor Plouffe, 3B
  4. Oswaldo Arcia, RF
  5. Chris Colabello, 1B
  6. Jason Kubel, DH
  7. Wilkin Ramirez, LF
  8. Jason Bartlett, SS
  9. Chris Herrmann, C
Starting Pitcher -- Mike Pelfrey

No broadcast today, unfortunately. We'll have to wait until tomorrow for that luxury.
