Video: Vintage Jon Lester strikes out 9 Tigers in victory

He looked as good as he ever has while shutting down the powerful Detroit lineup.

Jon Lester has been mostly great in 2013, but it's easy to forget that thanks to a very rough three-start stretch in which he gave up a significant chunk of the runs he's allowed all year. Part of those struggles came at the hands of the Tigers and their dangerous lineup, who scored five runs off of Lester in 5-2/3 innings back on June 21.

That Lester and those Tigers were nowhere to be found on Tuesday night, however, as Lester looked as good as he has in years, punching out nine Tigers without yielding a single walk, while holding their impressive offense -- one with Miguel Cabrera back in the fold -- to just one run.

In the 13 games since that previous appearance against Detroit, Lester owns a 3.07 ERA with three times as many strikeouts as walks, all while averaging 6-2/3 innings per start. He's getting there different ways than he used to, but, aside from those few June hiccups, he's been the Lester of old, and it's a huge part of why the Red Sox remain in first in the AL East despite injuries to their staff.
