Red Sox vs. Orioles: Xander Bogaerts starts at third against Bud Norris

Xander Bogaerts is playing third, but with John Lackey on the mound, he's almost guaranteed to be part of a depressing offensive performance from the Red Sox.

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

Xander Bogaerts is back in the lineup, playing third base against the right-handed Bud Norris as the Red Sox look to make it four straight wins.

  5. Daniel Nava, LF
  6. Mike Napoli, 1B
  7. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C
  8. Stephen Drew, SS
  9. Xander Bogaerts, 3B

Starting Pitcher -- John Lackey

Baltimore Orioles (70-60)

Nate McLouth, LF
Manny Machado, 3B
Chris Davis, 1B
Adam Jones, CF
Nick Markakis, RF
J.J. Hardy, SS
Matt Wieters, C
Wilson Betemit, DH
Brian Roberts, 2B

Starting Pitcher -- Bud Norris

It's certainly a pretty good looking lineup, but unfortunately that doesn't matter tonight. After all, John Lackey is on the mound, capping the Red Sox' potential for runs at, oh, two? Three?

Does it make any sense? No, not logically, but at this point I think it's time to accept that John Lackey included a pretty unfortunate provision in that dark deal he made to have one of the best years of his career after just about everyone had written him off as a loss.

The Aceves drives a tough bargain.
