Red Sox minor lines: An 18-inning night in Salem

The Salem Red Sox had to play 18 innings Tuesday night. And no, it wasn't a double-header.

Scott Cunningham

Pawtucket W 5-1

Box Score

Jackie Bradley Jr.: 1-3, BB, 2 K
Xander Bogaerts: 3-4, K
David Ross: 0-3, 3 K
Jeremy Hazelbaker: 0-4, K

Xander Bogaerts continues to rake, but so long as Will Middlebrooks makes it work in the majors, there will be few complaints that the later is up rather than the former. Then again I'm sure someone can devise an argument where Xander replaces the struggling Napoli.

Portland W 5-2

Box Score

Deven Marrero: 2-4, BB
Garin Cecchini: 1-4, K
Michael Almanzar: 0-4, K, SB
Christian Vazquez: 1-4, E
Travis Shaw: 4-4, 2B, BB, SB

Keith Couch: 7 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Noe Ramirez: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

Travis Shaw has 15 homers and 70 walks in 111 games. But when you're striking out a ton and living with a slightly low BABIP, there's a clear limit on the ceiling for your numbers.

Salem L 2-3 (In 18)

Box Score

Sean Coyle: 1-7, BB, 2 K
Keury De La Cruz: 1-8, 6 K, CS
Blake Swihart: 2-7
Mookie Betts: 2-7, 2B, K, SB
Cody Koback: 0-6, 2 K

Your unfortunate losing pitcher: second baseman Vladimir Frias. Somehow, though, despite getting all the way to position players pitching in the eighteenth, the game took "only" 4:41 to complete. In Boston that would've been nine hours easy.

Greenville L 0-2

Box Score

Kendrick Perkins: 1-4, 2 K

Brian Johnson: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Brian Jonhson is on a nice run right now, having allowed just three earned runs in his last 25 innings. His age is always going to provide a bit of an asterisk, but at the very least he's doing well at the level he's been placed in.

GCL Red Sox Game 1 L 1-2 (In 7)

Box Score

Jordon Austin: 1-4
Jon Denney: 1-3, K
Nick Longhi: 1-3

Myles Smith: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

GCL Red Sox Game 2 W 2-1 (In 7)

Box Score

Jordon Austin: 0-3, 2 K
Nick Longhi: 0-2, K

There's been little to be happy about in the GCL so far this year. Hopefully the 2013 draftees are just suffering from a typical case of "being rookies." That tends to get lots of players.
