The Red Sox will have a pair of scouts at Jake Peavy's Thursday night start against the Tigers according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.
Peavy has emerged over the last few days as the apparent top target for the Red Sox now that Matt Garza has gone to the Texas Rangers, with some reports saying that the two teams are already engaged in talks, possibly including struggling young third baseman Will Middlebrooks.
In his first start back from the disabled list, Peavy allowed four runs in six innings of work, but only two were earned, and aside from a lone home run his performance was actually fairly strong on the whole. That came against the Atlanta Braves, however, who even with the addition of a designated hitter when playing in US Cellular Field, don't really stack up against the Detroit lineup Peavy will have to face tonight.
The Diamondbacks, who will also have scouts present to watch Peavy, are 52-49, sitting 1.5 games back of the Dodgers in a relatively open NL West. With the sixth-highest ERA of any rotation in the National League, it's no shock that Arizona is looking to improve. The question is whether or not they're desperate enough to push the Sox out of the race.
