Red Sox activate Stephen Drew, option Brock Holt to Pawtucket

Stephen Drew is back in Boston, with Brock Holt heading down to Pawtucket to make room.

USA TODAY Sports

Stephen Drew will rejoin the Red Sox Saturday afternoon, with Brock Holt heading back to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room.

It's been a bit of a roller coaster season for Drew, who struggled to make his way back from a Spring Training concussion, went on a nice tear in May, then fell off again in June. He seemed to be on the way back again, hitting .364/.400/.667 in his last nine games of the month, but hit first the bench and, ultimately, the disabled list with a nagging hamstring injury.

Now he's back, and hopefully ready to pick up where he left off. When Drew is healthy, he's a pretty significant improvement over the replacements the Red Sox have tried at third base (Iglesias, of course, moving over to his natural position to cover up). That's true even when considering his streaky nature. Hopefully he'll have more success in actually moving past his injury than Shane Victorino has had. With Middlebrooks still struggling even in Triple-A, the Red Sox could use Drew's help on the left side of the infield.
