Red Sox option Allen Webster, Alfredo Aceves, call up Steven Wright, Pedro Beato

The Red Sox have optioned Allen Webster and Alfredo Aceves to Pawtucket, replacing them with Steven Wright and Pedro Beato

USA TODAY Sports

The constant shuffle of arms between Pawtucket and the major league club continued Wednesday with the Red Sox optioning Allen Webster and Alfredo Aceves, calling up Steven Wright and Pedro Beato to replace them.

Given that this move comes a good half-a-week before Webster's spot comes up again in the rotation, the smart money is on the Red Sox using his roster spot to secure an extra reliever until it's absolutely necessary to fill that rotation spot. That means that Steven Wright is most likely going to act not as a starter, but as a "break glass in case of emergency" long reliever to spell the pen in blowouts.

Beato fills a similar role, but without the ability to go long.

The upshot of all this is that Allen Webster's time in the rotation is almost certainly over. He can't be called up in the next 15 days without a corresponding DL move and it's not like the writing wasn't on the wall after his disaster outing Tuesday night. Now the only question is who comes next? Brandon Workman, already with the team? Or perhaps Rubby De La Rosa, working down in Pawtucket.

Whoever it is, they'll be hard-pressed to be worse.
