Red Sox minor lines: Will Middlebrooks, Xander Bogaerts, and the long ball

Will Middlebrooks is "proving himself," Xander Bogaerts is proving he's ready for Triple-A.

USA TODAY Sports

Pawtucket W 7-4

Box Score

Will Middlebrooks: 2-3, HR, BB
Bryce Brentz: 0-4
Jeremy Hazelbaker: 2-4, HR, 2 K
Brock Holt: 1-4, K

Chris Hernandez: 5.2 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
Alex Wilson: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

John Farrell said Middlebrooks had to prove himself in his minor league stint. Well...this can't hurt.

Portland W 6-0

Box Score

Xander Bogaerts: 2-4, HR, BB
Michael Almanzar: 1-4, HR
Travis Shaw: 1-3, BB, K, SB
Kolbrin Vitek: 1-4

Drake Britton: 8 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K

It took a while, but Bogaerts finally has his slugging up over .500 with that homer. In fact, he's got the much-coveted .300/.400/.500 line, plus a few points here and there. And he won't turn 21 for another four months.

Salem W 8-0

Box Score

Deven Marrero: 1-4, 2B, BB
Garin Cecchini: 0-4
Keury De La Cruz: 1-4, K
Brandon Jacobs: 1-4, 2B
Henry Ramos: 2-3, HR, BB, K, A

Henry Owens: 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 5 BB, 6 K

That's twice in three games that Owens has allowed as many walks as he has pitched innings. He'd been better about that sort of thing earlier this season. Hopefully he finds his way back there, because this isn't a terribly sustainable way of pitching.
