Red Sox minor lines: Good pitching? Lucky pitching? Who cares? Xander homered

Some good pitching, some great pitching, some scoreless-but-unimpressive pitching. And who cares because Xander homered again.

Pawtucket W 5-4 (In 10)

Box Score

Jackie Bradley Jr.: 2-5, 2B
Bryce Brentz: 2-4, BB
Xander Bogaerts: 0-4, BB, K
Jeremy Hazelbaker: 2-3, 3B, BB, SB

Rubby De La Rosa: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K
Clayton Mortensen: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR

The Red Sox need a starter, and Rubby might be the answer. But if so, the Sox really need to start stepping up his pitch counts. The only reason he made it through six this time was because of how dominant he was, needing fewer than 70 pitches to get the job done.

Portland L 3-8

Box Score

Garin Cecchini: 0-4, BB, 2 K
Michael Almanzar: 0-3, BB
Travis Shaw: 2-4, K, E
Christian Vazquez: 0-4, K

Salem L 7-11

Box Score

Henry Ramos: 0-5, K
Deven Marrero: 2-5, K, SB
Keury De La Cruz: 2-5, 2 K
Brandon Jacobs: 1-4, BB, K
Blake Swihat: 2-5, 2B, 2 K
Cody Koback: 1-4, K
David Renfroe: 0-4

Noe Ramirez: 3.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Noe Ramirez has a 2.17 ERA and 42 strikeouts to nine walks. It's not clear what he is--reliever, starter, or something in between--but he seems to be effective regardless of the answer.

Greenville W 8-0

Box Score

Mookie Betts: 3-4, K
Jose Vinicio: 3-4

Cody Kukuk: 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 7 BB, 4 K

Four more innings of that and Kukuk would have a full-blown Edwin Jackson.

Lowell L 3-6

Box Score

Tzu-Wei Lin: 0-4, K
Manuel Margot: 1-3, BB
Kendrick Perkins: 2-4, K
Williams Jerez: 1-4, K

Ty Buttrey: 3.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 0 K

Pawtucket W 7-2

Box Score

Jackie Bradley Jr.: 2-5, 2B
Bryce Brentz: 2-5, HR, 3 K
Xander Bogaerts: 2-5, HR

Alfredo Aceves: 8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K

And we go to the tape...

That makes three homers in eight hits for Bogaerts in Triple-A. He's got a few strikeouts, but that OBP will inevitably rise with his .200 BABIP.

Portland W 11-0

Box Score

Garin Cecchini: 2-4, 2 BB, K
Travis Shaw: 1-4, 2 BB, 2 K
Kolbrin Vitek: 2-5, 2B, K

Matt Barnes: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 5 BB, 8 K

Matt Barnes trades one problem for another. He's been quite good about walks all year, but not about keeping runs off the board. I guess you'll take that trade if you're Barnes, since it brings things back towards average levels.

Salem W 4-3

Box Score

Henry Ramos: 0-2, 2 BB
Deven Marrero: 3-4
Keury De La Cruz: 1-4, 2 K
Brandon Jacobs: 0-4, 2 K
David Renfroe: 1-4, K
Cody Koback: 0-4

Marrero is on a much needed 7-for-13 run.

Greenville L 0-6

Box Score

Mookie Betts: 1-2, 2 BB, K
Jose Vinicio: 1-3, 2 K

Austin Maddox: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Austin Maddox' first two outings as a reliever have been better than his awful run as a starter. Could hardly have been worse, of course.

Lowell L 1-3

Box Score

Tzu-Wei Lin: 1-4, BB
Manuel Margot: 1-4, BB, K
Kendrick Perkins: 0-3, BB, K
Williams Jerez: 0-4, K

Shaq Thompson he ain't, but at 1-for-22, Williams Jerez is making a run at it.
