David Ross has already been on the 7-day disabled list for a concussion this year, and is currently dealing with a second at the moment. The Red Sox, seeking to get a better grasp on Ross' condition, have sent him to Pittsburgh to see concussion specialist Dr. Michael Collins.
If you remember that name, it's the same doctor that Stephen Drew went to see before he was cleared to come back from the concussion DL a few months back. Ross' concussion is likely not as severe as Drew's was -- the fact manager John Farrell says this one isn't as bad as Ross' first, which wasn't too bad as far as traumatic brain injuries go, is an indication of that -- but it's still good to see the Red Sox attempting to get the best care for their players even for a "minor" concussion.
Ross was placed on the disabled list on Tuesday, along with Clay Buchholz, and was replaced on the big-league roster by backstop Ryan Lavarnway. The catching prospect will be behind the plate for the series opener against the AL Central-leading Tigers on Thursday, as starter Jarrod Saltalamacchia has played three games in two days in Ross' absence.
