Game 55: Red Sox vs. Phillies

The Red Sox remain in first place thanks to the Mets, but the quickest of glances in the rearview mirror will show how little that means. As the Red Sox have stagnated in a 14-14 May, the Rays have taken the opportunity to pull within a few games of the top, leaving the East a ridiculous four-team race at this point in the season.

Had the Red Sox taken advantage of a relatively light schedule, they could be sitting well ahead of the pack. Losses to struggling teams like the Twins, White Sox and--yes--Phillies have kept them from doing so. Dropping the series to the Phillies tonight, then, would be nothing new in the worst of ways. With an important series against the Yankees coming up, it's really past time to at least pick up a little momentum.

Go Sox!
