Pawtucket L 5-14
Jeremy Hazelbaker: 2-5, HR, 2 K
Ryan Lavarnway: 0-3, BB
Bryce Brentz: 1-5, HR, K, E
Juan Carlos Linares: 1-4, 3 K
Rubby De La Rosa: 2.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 2 HR
Chris Carpenter: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Alex Wilson: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 1 HR
Rubby De La Rosa's struggles carry right over from spring. He's still got the excuse of working his way back from Tommy John Surgery, though, having only returned to the mound last August, so it's not too concerning just yet.
Alex Wilson has no such excuse, but some nights the other team just scores 14 runs.
Portland L 4-7
Xander Bogaerts: 2-4, BB, K
Stephen Drew: 1-3, HR, BB
Travis Shaw: 1-4, 2B, BB, K
Matt Barnes: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Keith Couch: 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1 HR
It's not a pretty line from Matt Barnes, but in reality he gave up one big hit in an inning where he struck out the side. It just ended up costing him two runs. Keith Couch, meanwhile, seems to still be getting starting-length appearances out of the pen, so it might be too soon to consider him a reliever.
At the plate, Xander Bogaerts now has equaled his Portland walk total from last year, and the hits are starting to add up to boot. Meanwhile, Stephen Drew provides a reminder that he's pretty good at baseball two days before he rejoins the major league team.
Salem W 7-6
Sean Coyle: 1-4, 2B, BB
Deven Marrero: 3-5, 3 2B, K
Keury De La Cruz: 0-5, K, A
Brandon Jacobs: 1-4, 2B
Garin Cecchini: 4-4, 2B, E
Blake Swihart: 1-4
Mike Augliera: 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Man, wouldn't it be nice to have an uncertain, risky first pick actually turn out positively? In recent years, whenever the Sox have chosen someone that raised significant eyebrows with their first pick--Jason Place, Reymond Fuentes, Kolbrin Vitek--they've ended up looking pretty bad at the end of the day. Deven Marrero was one of those guys who invited some doubt. So far in Salem, though, he's making his doubters look bad, rather than the Red Sox. Hopefully he keeps it up.
Greenville L 4-5
Cody Koback: 0-4
Kendrick Perkins: 0-4, 3 K
Frank Montas: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 2 HR
Yunior Ortega: 3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR
Frank Montas throws the ball really, really hard. If they hit it, it might go a long way. But usually they don't hit it.
