Red Sox minor lines: The struggles of Matt Barnes (and Joel Hanrahan)

New, comments

Matt Barnes is not off to the best start this year. What's going wrong for the top Red Sox pitching prospect?

Box Score

Jackie Bradley Jr.: 0-5, 3 K
Bryce Brentz: 2-3, 2B, BB
Jeremy Hazelbaker: 1-1
Jose Iglesias: 1-4
Brock Holt: 0-4, 2 K

Joel Hanrahan: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HR

Hey there Joel, no rush now, y'hear?

Jeremy Hazelbaker's short night came due to a wrist injury.

Portland L 3-6

Box Score

Travis Shaw: 0-2, 3 BB
Juan Carlos Linares: 0-1, K
Kolbrin Vitek: 1-3
Michael Almanzar: 0-4, 3 K
Christian Vazquez: 0-3, BB, K

Matt Barnes: 4.2 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Keith Couch: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

So what's wrong with Matt Barnes? He's allowed fourteen earned runs in 14 innings of work, but it's come in spite of tons of ground ball outs and a 17:6 K:BB rate. This doesn't feel like the sort of thing that can keep happening long term, but it's perhaps at least in part an indication of inconsistency on the mound rather than just pure dumb luck.

Juan Carlos Linares' short night was also due to injury, so the Sox should probably get around to bubble wrapping Jackie Bradley Jr. and Bryce Bretnz sometime soon.

Salem L 3-6

Box Score

Sean Coyle: 1-4, 3 K
Garin Cecchini: 2-4, 3B, K
Brandon Jacobs: 1-3, 2B, BB
Keury De La Cruz: 1-4, 2 K
Blake Swihart: 0-2, BB, K
Henry Ramos: 0-3, K

A slower night from Sean Coyle, but Cecchini keeps on motoring, and Brandon Jacobs has spent these last ten games quietly starting to contribute.

Greenville L 3-10

Box Score

Cody Koback: 1-4, BB, K, E

Justin Haley: 3.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 2 HR
Yunior Ortega: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
