As ever, this lineup looks far superior with David Ortiz batting cleanup, even if it does mean the loss of Daniel Nava. The left fielder hasn't quite maintained the torrid pace he began the season with, but even over the past week he's still hitting .292 with a few walks and extra-base hits. Nothing to scoff at. Still, David Ortiz is a bat that can transform any lineup, and if Jonny Gomes hasn't really found his power stroke yet, it's certainly not time to start questioning his inclusion when there's a lefty on the mound.

The Red Sox have now lost thre of their last four games, which is not nearly so fun as winning seven in a row. But a win today would make it a series win, and that quickly changes the mood. They've got the right man on the mound to get the job done in Jon Lester. Now the just have to play baseball, and do it a lot better than they did last night.
