Red Sox vs. Athletics Lineups: David Ortiz gets the day off

David Ortiz will get the day off as the Red Sox go for the series win against the Oakland Athletics

Jim Rogash

The Red Sox will be without David Ortiz Monday night as they take on the Oakland Athletics looking for a series win.

We were forewarned that David Ortiz would need some days off after returning from the disabled list, and we seem to have run into the first one. It may seem like this is happening more often than it should, but the other game Ortiz missed unfortunately came during Sunday's doubleheader, unfortunately leaving the Red Sox' DH without a full day of rest.

Still, one wonders if the team wouldn't have been better off waiting for tomorrow's game against southpaw Brett Anderson, when they could feel better about slotting Jonny Gomes into that spot.

Starting Pitcher -- Bartolo Colon

Typically, this is where I might talk about the less-than-ideal pitching matchup, or how a lot of tonight depends on if yesterday was a sign of things to come from certain players or just a blip on the radar.

But tonight we're facing Bartolo Colon, and there's some history there. History when he up and ditched the team in 2008, history when he came back to give the 2010 Yankees 164 chemically enhanced innings. It's not like he's some sort of supervillain in Boston's history, part of the same rogues gallery as Bucky (__) Dent, Aaron (__) Boone, et al. But he is a guy who's hit just about every negative button one way or another.

Put up 10 on him, Red Sox.
