Red Sox minor lines: Matt Barnes comes to life, Xander Bogaerts keeps rolling

New, comments

The top names were doing what they're expected to Friday night, with Xander Bogaerts and Matt Barnes doing some fantastic work against the New Britain Rock Cats.

USA TODAY Sports

Portland W 12-1

Box Score

Xander Bogaerts: 3-4, 2B, 2 BB, K, SB
Travis Shaw: 2-3, BB
Juan Carlos Linares: 1-4, HR, BB, 2 K
Michael Almanzar: 3-5, HR, K
Kobrin Vitek: 2-4, BB, K
Christian Vazquez: 1-5, 2B, K

Matt Barnes: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 1 HR
Daniel Bard: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

While Xander Bogaerts' resurrection continues, Matt Barnes' gets underway. It's the first time in three tries Barnes has looked anything like his old self...but the good news is that he looked about as good as we've seen him, period.

As for Daniel Bard, this is now four straight games without an earned run. The walks are still lingering, however, and with control being his real problem, one assumes the Sox aren't done working on him.

Finally, there's Michael Almanzar. The third baseman started out as the exciting-but-raw super-toolsy project, then spent a lot of time disappointing. Last year he finally showed some signs of life, however, and this year he's off to a fantastic start, hitting .321/.379/.604. For now, he's worth paying attention to again.

Oh Greenville. This just does not seem like it's going to be a fun year in the South Atlantic League.
