The Red Sox have made another round of cuts today, reassigning Chris Carpenter, Chris Hernandez, Terry Doyle, and Oscar Villarreal to minor league camp, reducing their roster to 42 players in the process.
All of these cuts fall squarely in "no surprise" territory. Even with the Red Sox likely to be down Franklin Morales and Craig Breslow come April 1st, these four relievers were never really in the conversation given Boston's extensive bullpen depth. As is, Clayton Mortensen, Alfredo Aceves, and Daniel Bard are competing for a pair of spots. If one of those three is going to miss out, there was no real chance for any of these three.
The deadline for the Sox to cut down to 25 is coming in a hurry, but even before then they'll have some decisions forced on them. Lyle Overbay, for instance, has an opt-out for March 26, meaning the Sox will have to make their choice between him and Mike Carp sooner rather than later.
